Collection and Afterschool Club

We collect the students from their respective schools and bring them back to our Afterschool Club. The afterschool club encompasses two classes: currently we have a Junior Infants – 1st class and then our senior afterschool class is for 2nd – 6th class students.

When the students arrive in, they have a chance to have some snack and catch up with their friends. Then we start homework.  Homework is done in their classrooms in small groups with a teacher.  The homework is corrected, and a note written into the students’ handover book for the parents/guardians.

Once homework is completed the students are free to go to the garden to play or play inside with their friends. There are lots of games, jigsaws, open-ended materials and arts and crafts for the students to enjoy.

This environment is designed to ensure that the children feel confident and comfortable. They have opportunities to share their views and opinions about what they are doing and what matters to them. We involve the child in designing the activities they would like to do weekly. Some of these activities include baking, board games, arts and crafts, karaoke, make believe, invention, dance and music and creative play.

For those starting in Junior Infants we know that attending school is the beginning of a new phase in their lives and it is important for us to listen to the children and get an understanding of how they are enjoying their new environment. If we hear something ‘in the moment’ from a student, it is imperative that this is passed on to the parent daily for the parent to bring it up and discuss it with their child. We believe that honest and open communication is the only way to build a responsible working relationship with parents/guardians.
